Also consistent with hypotheses, negative urgency partially mediated the relation between AS and both types of negative reinforcement-related smoking expectancies. Although we are unaware of any extant study of this three-variable mediational pathway, the first portion of this pathway is consistent with a previous study (Weitzman et al., 2011), which found that AS was correlated with negative urgency in samples of predominately non-smokers. The second portion of this pathway is concordant with a prior study of college students that reported an association between negative urgency and negative reinforcement smoking expectancies (Doran et al., 2012). The current study advances past work by documenting the interrelation across this set of variables in mediational pathways in a sample of moderate-to-heavy chronic smokers.
