mix of cell type-specific and commonly bound PU.1 peaks (e.g., Figure 1B, peak position (b)). The association between cell-specific PU.1 binding and cell-specific gene expression was strongest for peaks close to the TSS (Pearson correlation coefficient r2 = 0.45, p<10−100), however even the distantly located set of PU.1 peaks (>100 kb) showed correlation with vicinal gene expression (r2 = 0.21, p<10−100). This is in line with the known distinct roles of PU.1 in both transcription initiation and enhancer function (Fisher and Scott, 1998; Lichtinger et al., 2007).
