Text

Given that approximately half of all individuals who try cigarettes become smokers and half of these die young from cigarette-related health problems [42], primary prevention has long been argued to be the best form of intervention. This twin study supports this argument by finding that the risk of progression upon initiation is great, suggesting that the underlying aetiological risk factors involved in initiation of cigarette use appear to be predominantly the same as those for heavier, more serious use.
