Text

In individuals who drink alcohol but are not dependent, Colder and O’Connor (15) found that an index of disinhibition (commission errors on a Go/No-Go task) was associated with alcohol use. Other studies have also shown that elevated motor disinhibition is associated with problem drinking in community samples of non-dependent drinkers (16–18), although this relationship is not always seen (19, 20). Weafer et al. (6) demonstrated that oculomotor disinhibition predicted heavy drinking in individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but not in healthy controls. We direct readers to recent reviews of the relationship between substance use and disinhibition from Verdejo-Garcia et al. (7) and Dick (21).
