The cortical surface was reconstructed to measure surface area and thickness at each surface location, or vertex (Fischl et al. 2004; Dale et al. 1999; Fischl and Dale 2000; Fischl et al. 1999). Studies demonstrate a high correlation of automatic and manual measures in vivo and ex vivo (Fischl and Dale 2000; Walhovd et al. 2005).
