These results provide support for the second hypothesis—that marriage is causally related to a reduction in risk for alcohol use disorder. This conclusion is consistent with recent smaller quasi-causal studies of young adult twin and sibling pairs that found that marriage predicted lower alcohol use after controlling for genetic and familial environmental confounders (25, 26).
