Third, it has been recently shown that SES is a critical determinant of variation across immigrant groups in the degree to which immigrants are selected on health. Analyses of the New Immigrant Survey found that positive health selection occurs among new legal permanent residents of the U.S. but varies by region of origin, with immigrants from all regions experiencing higher levels of positive health selection than immigrants from Mexico.115 Differences in the SES of immigrant streams was the key determinant of variations in health selection by region.
