transcripts involved in 1. Small GTPase-mediated signal transduction, apoptosis and cell cycle control; 2. Enzyme inhibitor activity, apoptosis and stress response; and 3. Magnesium ion binding and morphogenesis. Interestingly, morphine and heroin produced a similar time-dependent gene expression pattern within these three subsets. In addition, an inhibitor of protein translation blocked induction of the first two subsets of genes by ethanol or morphine, while induction of the third subset of genes by ethanol could be blocked by prior administration of a CRF or a glucorticoid receptor antagonist.
