adoption studies, children of alcoholics adopted by nonalcoholics who grow up in a nondrinking environment have a higher risk of becoming alcoholic than do children of nonalcoholics adopted by the same parents; children of alcoholics raised by their alcoholic father have a similar risk of developing alcohol dependence as their full brothers who were adopted by nonalcoholics (117). Overall, studies have shown that the heritability of alcohol-use disorders ranges from 40% to 60% (117, 131).
