For individuals with an atypical CLL phenotype MBL or non-CLL phenotype MBL, a more thorough evaluation is required since standard staging for NHL requires CT scanning (chest, abdomen, pelvis) and bone marrow biopsy.(33) Individuals with radiographic evidence of adenopathy are best classified as having NHL with the sub-classification (e.g. marginal zone lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma) based on immunophenotyping and, where relevant, cytogenetic analysis (e.g FISH evaluating for t(11;14)) or immunohistochemistry (e.g. cyclin D1 staining).(33) In appropriate circumstances, serum/urine protein electrophoresis to evaluate for lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma should be pursued (Table 4).
