behavior at different stages of their development. Having parents who use a strict and highly controlling parent style when children are young can potentially protect children from engaging in HED as well as other problem behaviors. However, once children engage in HED, the strict parenting style might prompt these children to rebel against parental authority by continuing to engage in HED and affiliating with peers who engage in risky behaviors, which could also lead to greater levels of HED and other risky behaviors. Authoritarian parenting as a risk factor for youth who are already engaging in HED may be especially likely for youth who have weak bonds with their parents and other adult figures.
