The purpose of this analysis was to examine offspring trauma exposure as a function of parental AUD. However, the effect of parental AUD status may have masked other contributing factors to offspring trauma, namely the mental health and/or trauma history of the parent. It is likely that a parent meeting full DSM-5 criteria for AUD would present with additional symptoms or co-occurring disorders (e.g. Nurnberger et al., 2004).
