Meta-analysis data indicate that varenicline improves the odds of abstinence two to three-fold, relative to placebo (Cahill et al. 2011). Varenicline is more effective for smoking cessation than NRTs (Aubin et al. 2008; Wu et al. 2006b) or bupropion (Gonzales et al. 2006). Yet, even with the most efficacious pharmacotherapies, the majority of smokers are unable to quit and maintain abstinence (Schnoll and Lerman 2006).
