her spouse were each measured by six items adapted from Schuster, Kessler, and Aseltine (1990) (e.g., How much does your spouse really care about you?, How often does your spouse make too many demands on you?). Finally, four items assessed the quality of decision making between the participant and his or her spouse (e.g., My partner and I are a team when it comes to making decisions). Items were summed to create a total quality score, with higher scores indicating higher relationship quality. The internal reliability of this overall scale was excellent (α=.94).
