For intense attraction or sexual needs, perhaps cognitive mediation to consider whether acting on the need is in one's best long-term interests may often be valuable. Strategies such as these may help one modulate the intensity of one's emotional experience in a way that facilitates one's return to a focus on more long-term considerations (Davidson, 2003; Larsen, 2000).
