Table 1 presents descriptive data for cases and controls. Controls had a higher proportion of males and were slightly older (and thus were farther through the period of risk for MDD). Consistent with known correlates of MDD, cases had a significantly lower educational level, less often had a partner, were more often smokers, and scored much higher on the NEO-FFI neuroticism scale.
