the African HapMap population suggesting that this is a relatively new variant that arose after the out-of-Africa migration of modern humans. The high prevalence of this allele in the Asian population and the lesser prevalence in European Americans may be explained by genetic drift and/or selective advantage. Interestingly, a similar haplogroup (block 1), without the 118G allele, was found in the African HapMap sample suggesting that the change to 118G may have occurred on this ancestral haplotype.
