One possible explanation for such findings is that certain subsets of “emotionally vulnerable” current marijuana users may discontinue use of the drug if they start to develop anxious apprehension about experiencing panic attacks in the future (i.e., a marijuana user who experiences a panic attack related to such use may discontinue marijuana use because of a specific fear that it could elicit a panic attack in the future). Thus, there may theoretically be a stronger relation between current marijuana use and panic attacks relative to panic disorder.
