The conclusion of these studies provides the identification of an extracellular signal, 5-HT, and an intracellular, secondary messenger system, cAMP-PKA. Importantly, the in vivo effects of postnatal handling are blocked with compounds that serve as 5-HT7 receptor antagonists.
