In addition to depression, others have found a link between lack of affective modulation of startle response and low fearfulness (Cook, Davis, Hawk, Spence, & Gautier, 1992) and psychopathy (Patrick, Bradley, & Lang, 1993). However, there were no indications that never-quitters failed to show the prototypical affect modulated reactivity because there were more fearless or were more likely to meet criteria for psychopathy than abstainers, relapsers, and control participants.
