These data indicate that the endocannabinoid system is involved in the “thermostat” regulation of the HPA axis, but it does not preclude that endocannabinoid signaling also contributes to extrahypothalamic regulation of the HPA axis. Further research is required to fully understand the nature of the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of the HPA axis under conditions of stress.
