Consumption frequency was measured using item #1 of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT; 38) questionnaire (“How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?”) or similarly worded items, recording the number of typical drinking days in categories from “never” to “daily”. These categories were recoded into pseudo-continuous number of days per month, using the median value for categories with a range of days (i.e., 3 days for the category “2–4 times per month”) or the most conservative value when the range was non-specific (i.e., 16 days for the category “4 or more times a week”).
