There often may be a discrepancy between children’s felt emotions and what they express or what is measured. In addition, social withdrawal, a type of internalizing problem, can occur for multiple reasons, not all of which involve negative emotion (Coplan & Armer, 2007). Moreover, the co-occurrence of externalizing problems might dilute the association between internalizing symptoms and sadness.
