to either an Amphenol 5-pin connector (adult rats) or were assembled into a custom 5-pin cap (for the periadolescent rats), and the assembly was anchored to the skull with dental acrylic and anchor screws. All the animals were pair-housed in standard plastic cages on a 12-h light/dark cycle (lights on at 8am) and food and water were provided ad libitum. All experimental protocols were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the Scripps Research Institute and were consistent with the guidelines of the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
