Text

For example, a child might attend to interesting objects or sounds in their environment as a way to avoid engaging in a forbidden behavior. The effectiveness of redirecting attention as a strategy during this task has been demonstrated across multiple studies (e.g., Eigsti, Zayas, Mischel, Shoda, Ayduk, Dadlani … & Casey, 2006; Peake, Hebl, & Mischel, 2002; Rodriguez, Mischel, & Shoda, 1989). However, no study has examined whether attentional control at an earlier time point accounts for variation in children’s performance on the task.
