not women, who were younger at the initial screening were more likely to re-offend (Lapham et al., 2000). Similarly, while there is sharp evidence for differences in the course of alcohol abuse and dependence in community samples (Dawson, Grant, & Ruan, 2005; Edens, Glowinski, Grazier, & Bucholz, 2008; Harford, Grant, Yi, & Chen, 2005), studies using treatment or high-risk samples do not find many such differences (Schuckit, Anthenelli, Bucholz, Hesselbrock, & Tipp, 1995; Schuckit, Daeppen, Tipp, Hesselbrock, & Bucholz, 1998). These two sets of findings suggest that, once a severity threshold for alcohol use disorder is reached, gender plays an insubstantial role.
