of the significance of alcohol problems in their local communities. While we did not assess personal or familial experiences with alcohol problems and/or treatment as part of the self-administered survey or focus group discussion, many participants mentioned someone in their family and/or community who has struggled with alcohol problems. One male participant said, “Alcoholism runs in my family. It goes back generations”, and another noted, “We all know alcohol really effects our communities really, really badly.” People who have experienced alcohol problems themselves or in their families may be particularly open to participating in alcohol genetics research since the topic may be especially salient to them. Exploring Latinos’ ideas about different areas of alcohol genetics research (e.g., familial aggregation because of genetic or environmental similarities, genetic ancestry, and genetic liability for how much people drink, or alcohol-related liver disease) is a worthwhile aspect to consider in future research, as thoughts and attitudes may differ by topic, and study materials and recruitment strategies can be adapted accordingly.
