Text

Supplemental analyses were conducted to assess whether the age at which parental divorce/separation occurred (childhood or adolescence) affected the results. Offspring who experienced parental divorce/separation were divided into two groups: those who experienced parental divorce/separation up to age 12; and those who experienced parental divorce/separation at age 13 or later. The prevalence of lifetime alcohol dependence among those who experienced parental divorce/separation up to age 12 was 19.5% (SE=0.8). The prevalence of lifetime alcohol dependence among those who experienced parental divorce/separation at age 13 or later was 17.8% (SE=1.2). A chi-square test for difference in proportions was not significant (x2 =1.67, df=1, p=0.20). Thus, age at parental divorce/separation did not appear to influence the likelihood of offspring lifetime alcohol dependence.
