Members of the public and research community, for instance, have pointed to disrespect for Lacks' private life and autonomy, and the unjust enrichment of investigators who have benefited from their research on the HeLa cells while her family remained poor (Javitt, 2010; Skloot, 2010). While various scholars in the humanities disciplines, including those funded by the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) in genetics program, have worked diligently to identify and understand how to address ethical issues raised by genomic research, including those values at the heart of the controversy around the use of the HeLa cells, there remains much debate about how to best protect the privacy of individuals who participate in genomic research.
