onset corresponded to the beginning of the observation period in the current study, by which point older ages and longer intervals represented markers of chronic dependence, implying a poor prognosis for future recovery. Thus, correlates of recovery take on quite different interpretations when measured at the start and the end of the period over which recovery is assessed. Another example of this is the former finding of a positive association between being married and both AR and NR that was not replicated in the current study. In this case, the former study’s findings may indicate that individuals who recovered were more likely to have become/remained married than those who did not recover; that is, recovery may have affected marital status rather than vice versa.
