In each survey year from 1997 to 2014 participants were asked: “In any 1 year, have you had at least 12 drinks of any type of alcoholic beverage?” “In your entire life, have you had at least 12 drinks of any type of alcoholic beverage?” “In the past year, how often did you drink any type of alcoholic beverage?” and “In the past year, on those days that you drank alcoholic beverages, on the average, how many drinks did you have?” We characterized those who consumed <12 alcoholic beverages in their lifetime as lifetime abstainers; those who consumed 12 or more drinks in their lifetime or 12 or more drinks in any 1 year, but none in the past year as former drinkers; and those who consumed 12 or more drinks in any 1 year or in their lifetime and 1 or more drinks in the past year as current drinkers.
