Like community-engaged research, there is emphasis on partnerships between scientists and the public and the importance of working together to advance research. However, in citizen science, it is clear that the researchers design the studies, and the citizen scientists contribute to them; thus, unlike community-engaged participatory research, the idea is not an equal partnership in which both parties work together on all aspects of the research project.
