Five response options range from “my child is not allowed to drink/use marijuana/smoke cigarettes under any circumstances” to “I do not set rules about my child’s drinking/marijuana use/smoking cigarettes” with an additional response option of “I have not made rules yet about my child drinking/marijuana use/smoking cigarettes.” If rules have been set, two follow-up questions are designed to determine whether penalties are enforced for violating the rules (“Are these the same rules for all family members; Do you enforce penalties for violating family rules about using marijuana/smoking cigarettes”). All parents fill out this instrument.
