Further, Thomas and colleagues (2004) found greater stimulant response to alcohol challenge among alcohol dependent individuals relative to social drinkers. Prospective research is needed to begin testing the mechanisms through which stimulant and sedative responses could contribute to problematic drinking outcomes.
