We assessed the dependence of RIN values on the other covariates available to us. Our focus was on the explanatory power of our available covariates on the RIN for each RNA extraction (2318 RNA samples). In this study, we assessed 2318 RNA samples. The calculated RIN ranged from 1 to 8.5 with a mean of 3.85 (Table 1). Forty-three per cent of our samples had RIN values of < 3. We found that 33% of the variation in RIN was explained by differences among tissue blocks (adjusted R2 measure), which set an upper limit for the explanatory power of our covariates, which all act at a between-tissue-sample level. Sixteen per cent of the variation in RIN was explained by individual-level differences.
