Since these regions subserve attentional modulation and assessment of emotional salience (Öngür and Price 2000), abnormalities within the DMN may underlie cognitive and affective processing problems in psychiatric conditions. It is not currently clear whether specific regions within the DMN underlie distinct cognitive and affective abnormalities.
