Text

Respondents most commonly described their substantive interpretation of the term “genetics” by talking about hereditary in terms of traits that are passed down from parents to children (39%). For instance, this individual tried to articulate his understanding of genetics. “I just started getting to know really what it really means. It’s got to do with genetic research with your family. You know, you and your brother got the same type of attitude or you know, your mom is—to me it’s like the environment of your family. If all of y’all got the same—how do I put it?—the same … I can’t explain it right. I know it’s got to do with the family environment, that’s what I know about it. The genetics in your body, in your family … me and my brother have the same type of blood or whatever.”
