Women with schizophrenia also tend to continue to have better outcomes, linked at least in part to better social functioning than males (Castle & Murray, 1991; Grossman et al., 2008; Thorup et al., 2007). It has also been observed that males are more likely to have a history of lower functioning prior to their first psychotic break, suggesting that males may be more at risk for earlier abnormal neurodevelopmental processes that could interact with other processes during adolescence to facilitate the onset of schizophrenia (Castle & Murray, 1991; Thorup et al., 2007).
