was buried within the cerebral folds. The children of women who consumed the greatest amount of alcohol per day showed the greatest effect. Furthermore, the authors noted that the fold opening, or distance between the sulcal [walls], was greater in children exposed to gestational alcohol in the majority of cortical regions. These effects were observed in children with and without microcephaly, suggesting that these deviations in the folding pattern were not primarily due to having a smaller brain.
