The differences in severity of AD between treatment samples and the NESARC sample may be why the telescoping findings do not hold true when examined by a community sample such as the NESARC. In addition, the lack of gender differences in the course of AD may be due to the documented increases in the rates of both alcohol use and AD in community samples (Alvanzo et al., 2011), especially among women (Grucza et al., 2008a, b; Keyes et al., 2008).
