For persistent smoking, we considered age at the first cigarette, as it significantly affects the downstream steps in smoking behavior (Breslau et al. 1993). Further, the interval between the first and second cigarette was considered as an estimate of the initial speed of transition. However, as the genome‐wide analyses showed lack of power, no follow‐up analysis was performed.
