The first documentation of the relationship of a low LR to AUD risk factors such as a family history of AUDs was generated through reports from alcohol challenges with individuals with higher and lower AUD risk (e.g., Schuckit & Gold, 1988; Schuckit & Rayses, 1979). These were 20-year-old drinkers with and without an AUD parent who themselves were not yet heavy episodic drinkers and who did not meet AUD criteria. In that paradigm, over the years the group at higher AUD risk demonstrated less intense alcohol responses regarding subjective feelings of intoxication, standing steadiness, hormone responses, and/or several electrophysiological measures (e.g., Anthenelli et al., 2021; Ehlers et al., 1989; Paulus et al., 2012; Quinn & Fromme, 2011; Schuckit & Gold, 1988; Schuckit et al., 1987).
