Text

The low LR is not the only response-related phenotype linked to adverse alcohol outcomes. Another is higher stimulation from alcohol observed most prominently at rapidly rising BACs in some paradigms (King et al., 2021; Plawecki et al., 2019; Ramchandani et al., 2009; Ray et al., 2016; Schuckit, 2014b). The specific alcohol reaction phenomenon observed in individuals at elevated risk for future heavier drinking is likely to reflect the criteria used for subject selection and the evaluation procedures incorporated in the research protocol, and both low LR and high stimulation have been shown to relate to higher alcohol intake and related problems (e.g., King et al., 2014, 2021; Schuckit, 2014, 2018). Our own prospective work in this area began in the mid-1970s with the low LR, which then formed the basis for all follow-ups in this prospective study, and, thus, the data used in the analyses reported below all came from low LR paradigms.
