PEG particles occurring across Zones I–IV of spines were considered “total” spinous labeling, determined by counting PEG particles at “synaptic” plus “nonsynaptic” zones. Figure 3 shows our schematic of the zones used for PEG categorization. Our synaptic Zones I–III correspond closely to Bins 1–3 and 5 of Yildirim et al. (2008), whereas our Zone IV overlaps mostly with Yildirim’s Bin 4.
