Although that study did not find evidence for association with dependence, these two SNPs were significantly associated with early subjective response to tobacco. It is possible that the lack of association with nicotine dependence may be related to the fact that both samples were composed of adolescents and young adults. Number of unsuccessful quit attempts was also modestly associated with rs4953. While rare, this SNP was also found to be moderately associated with dependence in the Saccone et al (2007) study and the Zeiger et al (2008) study.
