Family support (e.g., item: How much can you rely on family for help when you have a serious problem?) and family strain (e.g., item: How often do they get on your nerves?) were assessed using 4-item scales ranging 1 (a lot) to 4 (not at all; Schuster, Kessler, & Aseltine, 1990; Whalen & Lachman, 2000). Both scales were recoded, so that higher scores reflect higher perceived family support (α = .82) and family strain (α = .80).
