The evidence supporting a role for FTO in the regulation of food intake is slowly growing. The BMI-increasing allele of FTO SNPs has been found to be associated with increased energy intake,80,95-97 increased intake of dietary fat96,98,99 or protein97,100, increased appetite and reduced satiety,101,102 poor food choices and eating habits,103,104 and loss of control over eating.105 A recent GWAS of macronutrient intake in more than 70,000 individuals identified the BMI-increasing allele of FTO SNPs to be highly significantly associated with increased protein intake.106 Despite the growing evidence, other studies have not been able to confirm associations with dietary traits.43,60,107-111
