for linkage using each of the 12 alcohol dependence symptoms assessed by the SSAGA. Corrections were not made to the reported LOD scores to account for multiple testing, but we attempted to control for this in two ways. First, we conducted follow-up analyses of the 12 symptoms only in those regions identified by the initial genome scans of the alcohol dependence diagnoses and limited the exploratory analyses to 3 symptoms clusters. Second, we interpreted the results of these analyses in a descriptive manner rather than using them to determine statistical significance. It is important to note that while this approach significantly reduced the number of statistical tests conducted, we likely missed some potentially interesting linkage findings between individual symptoms and genomic regions that fall outside of the initial linkage peaks.
