Obesity appears to be associated with lower odds of a past-year drug dependence diagnosis although not a past-year diagnosis of drug abuse (Pickering et al., 2007). In another nationally representative study (Simon et al., 2006) obesity was associated with lower odds of a lifetime substance use disorder, a diagnosis including both alcohol and drug use disorders.
