who experienced stressful life events in the past 12 months would be more likely to also have new or ongoing SUD in the past 12 months, and that this effect would be stronger for women compared to men. It is important to note that, due to the cross-sectional nature of the NESARC, causal or temporal relationships between stressful life events and transitions in SUD diagnoses cannot be addressed in the present investigation.
